Defending the OT Environment

Organizations are becoming increasingly aware of the vulnerabilities and threats faced by their Operational Networks. Security Managers and Directors are being tasked by their Executive and Boards to implement common security frameworks and policies across both the IT and OT environments. It is generally accepted that though the attacks may be similar, the impact of failing either by the lack of action or inappropriate action is significantly different.

Come hear from Dan Scali, Senior Manager for ICS Consulting at Mandiant, a FireEye company. Dan will discuss the threats and risks faced by control networks in Oil and Gas, Utilities, and other industries. He will provide some stories from the trenches of real world breaches as well as provide mitigation strategies to consider from both a technical and organizational perspective.

Dan Scali leads Mandiant’s Industrial Control Systems Security Consulting practice, where he focuses on cyber threats with the potential to create physical consequences in industries such as Electric Utilities, Oil & Gas, and Manufacturing. This includes developing cyber security strategies, performing technical assessments, and implementing cyber incident response plans tailored to operational technology environments.

Prior to joining Mandiant, Dan was a Staff Engineer at GE Intelligent Platforms where he led the security program for GE’s Proficy software products. In that role, Dan worked with asset owners to deploy SCADA and industrial control systems securely, ensured that software and hardware were developed following security best practices, performed product security testing, and coordinated vulnerability response.

Dan is a contributor to the ISA/IEC-62443 (formerly ISA-99) series of standards that address industrial automation and control systems security. He is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Boston College.
